In the early 20th century, F. W. I. Lundy Brothers Restaurant was one of the most beloved and famous restaurants in New York City. Founded by Frederick William "Irving” Lundy in the middle 1920s, the Lundy Brothers establishment drew up to 15,000 patrons a day with fresh seafood, served on the waterfront of Brooklyn's Emmons Avenue in Sheepshead Bay. At its peak, Lundy's served a million patrons annually and, for a period of time, was the highest grossing restaurant in America.
Frederick William "Irving" Lundy was born in 1895 and raised in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. The oldest of seven children, Irving came from a long line of renowned fish sellers. At the turn of the 20th century, Lundy started a small business, selling clams out of a pushcart. By 1907, he had opened a clam bar, which was built on stilts over Sheepshead Bay. By the time he was 16, he was employing several workers. By 1926, he founded the first Lundy Brothers restaurant, originally located on the waterfront. In 1935, the restaurant was re-established (after major renovations to the pier and bulkheads on the harbor) on Emmons Avenue. The Spanish Mission-style, two-story building in which the restaurant was housed, covered an entire block and could seat up to 2,800 people. At the time, it was the largest restaurant in New York. In 1977, Mr. Lundy passed away and his restaurant closed shortly after. Two decades later, the restaurant was re-opened, under new management, but sadly, closed permanently in 2007. (Until now.)
Renowned for its fresh seafood, the historic Lundy’s served oysters, lobster, a specialty called a "shore dinner", clams, and pies. A portion of the restaurant's financial success in the 1920s may have been partly due to its service of alcohol during Prohibition, but New Yorkers fondly recalled the mouthwatering biscuits, the superb and comforting bisque, and the excellent “huckleberry” pie.
With this new and thoughtfully considered reincarnation of Lundy’s, we hope to honor the memory of this beloved institution and its place in the culinary history of Brooklyn and New York. It is our hope that your dinner with us will be a fond throwback to old-school restaurant hospitality and a fresh experience of a classic menu.
